CHILDREN AND AIDS

Since the opening of CSC (January 1996)  we knew that children can be infected by the virus HIV and develop AIDS that leads to death, but we never expect  to experience it and to suffer so much.

All these experiences created in us a so strong will and effort in fighting the virus HIV  to become the first center in Thailand to develop a global approach for the benefit of these children.

The number of children from 0 to 10 years admitted at the CSC since the beginning has been 24; 10 of them already died; 14 are still with us.

The number of young people from age 10 to 20 years admitted at the CSC since the beginning are 11; 9 of them already died; 2 are still with us.

The number of adults who already died is 192.

All of us at the center use to cry when a child died, and do everything we could to prepare the body, the coffin, the flowers and the funeral ceremony in the best way.

Now it seems we are dreaming,  one year passed  without seeing children dying, and more than that children by themselves are happy and have a high standard of living.

All this because of the use of antiretrovirals. But is not an easy game! A lot of love patience and affection are also the good ingredients of the “antiretroviral meal”.

Thanks to the nurse Non , the collaboration of

Doctors without Borders and the financial support of many friends; first of all Mrs. Sonia, Mr. And Mrs. Gambaccini and many others, we could achieve a very good standard in the cure of our children orphans with AIDS.

Now they are the LIFE at the CSC, and adults in bad phisical condition enjoy their presence playing with them and taking care in their need of sweets and… affection.

There are nine children taking the so called “cocktail”, mostly done by a combination of AZT, DDI,3TC,VIRACEPT, NEVIRAPIN,NORVIR, CRIXIVAN, D4T,INVIRASE, SAQUINAVIR.

4 children at the Center are still without this  miraculous treatment!

In Thailand anti-retrovirals are still available only at a significant cost!

The cost of medecine for one child is 15,000 baht per month (About 400 US$).

Orphans children with AIDS, not only have nothing, but are also rejected…Pricia at the age of five, and full of wounds, was walking with his small mattress from one corner to another in the city of Pattaya, when somebody thought better to refer him to our center. This is the last today’s story (17 March 2.000).
