 ASIAN HIV/AIDS UP-DATE 1999

·       Approximately 7 million people in the Asia-Pacific Region are infected with the HIV/AIDS virus.

·       Infections grew by 70% from 1996-1998.  The W.H.O. estimates a 300% rise in HIV and a 600% rise in AIDS cases by the year 2003.

·       India             -4 million people infected. (No. 1 in world)

·       Cambodia     -5% of population has HIV or AIDS

·       Thailand       

- About 2% infected

- More than 5000 children born each year with HIV

- About 63,000 children under the age of 15 will be infected by 2000 and 47,000 will die of AIDS

- More than 100,000 will have lost their mothers to AIDS by 2000 (1/3 under age of 5)

·       Malaysia 

-   Documented HIV cases in 1993 = 6,000

-   Documented HIV cases in 1999 = 31,000

Economic Crisis in 1997-98:

·       80% increase in people going into the sex industry in Thailand and Philippines

·       Real wages decline by up to 30% in Indonesia

·       Sharp increase in HIV infection among Thai IDUs in early 1998, from 40 to 48% (crisis/random?)

·       At least US$30 billion withdrawn from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand
